THE OLIVE RIDLEY PROJECT LAUNCHES THE SEA TURTLE RESEARCH EXPEDITION

ORP-maxi

The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) was established in 2013 to actively fight ghost nets in the Indian Ocean. They also promote recycling of end-of-life fishing nets, offer marine and turtle conservation education programs and carry out research. Further to this they also provide care, protection, treatment & security for turtles found injured. ORP Marine Turtle Rescue Centre is situated at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu Resort in Baa Atoll.

The research expedition conducted by ORP spans over 4 weeks and will be carried out in Haa Alif Atoll to explore the area for sea turtles. This is a remote area where little scientific work has been previously conducted. During the pilot surveys of ORP, there have been reported sightings of manta rays, dolphins, sharks and stingrays in addition to turtles.

This volunteer opportunity is open to anyone who is interested in sea turtle research and looking to go on an adventure. Volunteer requirements include being 18+, able swimmers/snorkelers and have a passion for sea turtles and research. Your ‘home base’ will be a tropical island, and therefore quite isolated. If you do not think you are particularly adventurous, then this expedition may not be for you.

The research expedition can accommodate 5 volunteers at a time & the Olive Ridley Project requests a reasonable donation to cover the expenses of the expedition.
