The Maldives has marked an important milestone in regional aviation and tourism development with the official opening of the newly expanded HDh. Hanimaadhoo International Airport. The upgraded airport introduces international-standard infrastructure to the northern part of the country, paving the way for increased global connectivity, easier access for travellers, and enhanced commercial activity across surrounding islands.
The inauguration was held on 10 November 2025 and led jointly by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and India’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu, who attended as a representative of the Government of India. The project was financed through a credit line extended by India’s Exim Bank and executed by JMC Projects, strengthening long-standing cooperation between both nations in aviation and infrastructure.
To officially mark the opening, a Maldivian Airlines Airbus A320 landed on the newly constructed runway-a symbol of the airport’s readiness to receive larger aircraft and international routes.

What the Expansion Means for the Maldives
With its strategic location in the north, Hanimaadhoo Airport is expected to become a key gateway supporting tourism, inter-island travel, and trade. The development includes:
• A 2.46 km runway capable of handling narrow-body international aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737
• A new two-storey passenger terminal with international and domestic check-in, modern arrival facilities, and duty-free
• Capacity to handle up to 1.3 million passengers per year, significantly improving regional tourism flow
• A dedicated cargo terminal to support commercial logistics and air freight
Following the inauguration ceremony, the President also opened a new Bank of Maldives dollar counter inside the terminal, offering banking convenience for international travelers and businesses.
Why This Matters for Hospitality & Tourism
For resorts, guesthouses, and travel partners, the launch of Hanimaadhoo International Airport opens the northern atolls to:
- Direct international arrivals
- Reduced domestic transfer times
- New opportunities for charter operations
- Increased visitor accessibility to undeveloped and boutique resort islands
This is a major step toward decentralizing tourism, allowing travellers to explore untouched atolls with easier and more efficient access.
Lets Go Maldives Perspective
As one of the region’s leading travel and hospitality partners, Lets Go Maldives views this development as a catalyst for future tourism growth in the north. The expanded airport strengthens long-term potential for new routes, diversified markets, and greater inbound demand-especially for resorts located across Haa Dhaalu, Haa Alif, and Shaviyani Atoll.
We look forward to collaborating with airline partners, hospitality operators, and international travel stakeholders as this new airport begins operations.
