Beneath the Surface: Where Reef Life Comes Alive at Pullman Maldives Maamutaa

June 23, 2025

Just steps from the shore at Pullman Maldives Maamutaa lies a reef that feels like a hidden world-vibrant, wild, and teeming with life. The Maamutaa House Reef, only 100 meters from the beach, is one of those rare places where you don’t have to go far to experience the full magic of the ocean.

Turtles glide by as if they’ve been expecting you-green and hawksbill, calm and curious. Reef sharks weave in and out of coral arches. Schools of parrotfish and angelfish bring bursts of color, and now and then, an eagle ray or an octopus appears as if out of nowhere. It’s the kind of place where something new swims into view every time you look.

What makes this reef truly special isn’t just the marine life. It’s how close it all feels. You start by swimming through a stretch of seagrass-a habitat many overlook, but one that’s full of life and purpose. Then the reef opens up below you-layers of coral in every shape and color, moving gently with the current, alive with motion.

Aqua Week 2025: Dive In, Make a Difference

From July 13 to 20, the island shifts into something even more special with Aqua Week-a week dedicated to exploring, learning, and celebrating the ocean. It also marks the launch of the resort’s Seagrass Mapping & Awareness Project, and guests are invited to be part of it.

It’s hands-on, but simple: guided snorkel tours where you’ll help collect visual data, spot seagrass species, and understand how this often-forgotten ecosystem plays a vital role in the health of the reef. It’s conservation, made approachable-a chance to learn and help, just by showing up and getting in the water.

And that’s just part of it. Aqua Week brings together innovation and creativity in ways that make the underwater experience even more unforgettable:

  • Workshops with Insta360 will teach you how to capture your reef encounters in stunning 360-degree footage.
  • Edge K5 scooters let you glide effortlessly through the water — think less swimming, more flying.
  • And yes, there’s a mermaid. Gloria Xue, a professional mermaid performer, will be hosting underwater shows, mermaid classes, and photo sessions that add a touch of magic to the whole experience.

Protecting What Matters

The Seagrass Mapping & Awareness Project is more than a one-week effort. It’s a long-term commitment:

  • In July, the project begins with identifying and mapping seagrass species.
  • In August and September, guests can take part in guided snorkeling tours to help document the meadows.
  • In October, a short film will premiere, sharing what’s been discovered along the way.

It’s all part of Pullman Maldives Maamutaa’s larger commitment to sustainability-and a way for guests to play a role in protecting the reef and everything that depends on it.

Experiences Rooted in the Reef

Whether you’re snorkeling for the first time or have thousands of dives behind you, there’s something here for you. Some of the highlights:

  • Guided reef tours with marine biologists
  • Discover Scuba Diving directly from the beach
  • Night snorkeling under UV lights to see the reef glow
  • Citizen science activities, including seagrass research
  • Ocean Explorers programs for kids who love sea creatures as much as the grown-ups do

There’s no need to go far or plan big. At Pullman Maldives Maamutaa, the reef is always within reach-and always ready to surprise you.
