12th April 20205 – This morning, we proudly marked the 59th anniversary of Velana International Airport (VIA) with a flag-hoisting ceremony, a unity walk, and a celebratory cake cutting a fitting tribute to nearly six decades of connection, progress, and shared milestones.

Velana International Airport, the Maldives’ primary international gateway, has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The story began in the 1960s when the first aircraft landed on a simple steel-plated runway on Hulhulé Island. In April 1966, the airport was officially opened, setting the stage for a transformation that would redefine travel and tourism in the country.
Initially a small landing strip, the airport has undergone multiple phases of development over the decades, growing alongside the Maldives’ rise as a world-renowned travel destination.
