Eco Week at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi: A Celebration of Nature, Community, and Purpose

June 23, 2025

At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, there’s always been a deep connection between island life and the natural world that surrounds it. But during this year’s Eco Week, that connection took center stage-with a week full of hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, and moments that reminded everyone just how much the planet gives us.

Held in honor of World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day, the week brought together guests and team members in a shared celebration of nature-not through words alone, but through action.

Where Conservation Meets Curiosity

The week began with a guided snorkelling tour and reef clean-up, led by the resort’s marine biologist. Guests explored the vibrant house reef while also helping to keep it healthy-a simple yet powerful way to see just how much difference one small act can make.

On World Environment Day, the island’s green heart came alive. Guests planted trees, walked nature trails, and learned more about the island’s native plants. It was less about ticking boxes and more about slowing down, noticing the details, and planting something that would live long after the week ended.

Then came World Ocean Day, with its focus on reef restoration. Guests took part in coral planting along the shore at Waters Edge Beach-a project that’s part of the resort’s long-term efforts to bring damaged reef areas back to life. That evening, a documentary screening under the stars invited quiet reflection on the beauty and fragility of our oceans. The night ended with something truly unforgettable-a night snorkelling trip, where the reef revealed its glow-in-the-dark magic.

Living Sustainability Every Day

Eco Week isn’t just a once-a-year initiative-it’s part of something much bigger. Through the Sun Siyam Cares program, the resort is working every day to make travel more sustainable and thoughtful.

In the past year alone:

  • 126 trees were planted across the island
  • 18 coral frames were installed in the lagoon
  • Single-use plastics were reduced by switching to glass water bottles and launching an in-house bottling plant
  • Local schools were supported with environmental awareness sessions and educational outreach

It’s this balance-offering unforgettable experiences while doing the right thing for the environment and community-that defines the heart of Iru Fushi.

A Different Kind of Island Escape

At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, sustainability isn’t an add-on-it’s woven into the experience. From reef-friendly activities to meaningful connections with local nature and culture, guests are invited to be part of something that feels as good as it looks.
