Inspiring the Next Generation of Ocean Guardians at Le Méridien Maldives

September 3, 2025

The ocean is the heartbeat of the Maldives, and last week, its wonders came alive for the children of Ohluvelifushi School. Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa, together with Sub Oceanic Maldives and Scuba Schools International (SSI), welcomed the students for a day of discovery, learning, and connection to the marine world that surrounds them.

The visit followed SSI’s recent work at the resort, where new training materials were filmed on the resort’s house reef. Wanting to go further than the water’s edge, the partners extended their mission into the community, helping local children understand both the beauty of the ocean and their role in protecting it.

Learning about sea turtles

Leading the session was Cesar Briliandi, Marine Biologist at Le Méridien Maldives and Sub Oceanic Maldives. His talk on sea turtles quickly caught the children’s imagination. They learned how to tell hawksbill and green turtles apart, why seagrass meadows are so important, and the reasons these gentle animals are endangered.

There were interactive games and quizzes too, which kept everyone engaged and encouraged the students to think about how the ocean shapes daily life in the Maldives.

Building connections

For the school’s principal, the impact was immediate. “Our students were deeply inspired by the visit. They asked questions, learned directly from experts, and now see the ocean as part of their own future,” said Mr. Ibrahim.

The collaboration doesn’t end here. In the coming months, SSI’s partner Mares will donate snorkeling sets to the school. The students will then return to explore Le Méridien Maldives’ house reef and spend time at the resort’s Marine Conservation Hub.

A resort with a purpose

Set in the Lhaviyani Atoll, Le Méridien Maldives is not only a place of barefoot luxury but also a hub for sustainability and conservation. With 134 villas across beach and overwater settings, a vibrant house reef, and access to more than 50 dive sites, the resort blends relaxation with adventure. Guests can dive where professionals train, encounter manta rays and reef sharks, and even take part in conservation projects that make every stay more meaningful.
