Celebration of the Mighty Manta at Kandooma Maldives
This September, Kandooma Maldives is extending its celebration of the majestic Manta Ray throughout the entire month, following the success of last year’s World Manta Day festivities. The resort has planned a series of educational and engaging activities suitable for all ages, including information sessions, snorkeling, and diving excursions.
While nature’s timing can be unpredictable, the resort’s dedicated ‘marine spotters’ are on high alert every morning to locate the Manta Rays in the surrounding Maldivian waters, ensuring guests have the best chance to witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.
Protecting Hawksbill Turtles at Kandooma Maldives
Kandooma Maldives is taking proactive steps to protect a nest of Hawksbill Turtle eggs discovered on the island’s western shores. Hawksbill Sea Turtles, listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), face numerous threats, making conservation efforts crucial.
The resort has implemented guidelines to ensure the safety of the hatchlings, including minimizing bright lights, avoiding loud noises, and being mindful of where guests walk. In case of disoriented hatchlings, guests are encouraged to gently guide them towards the sea and notify resort staff.
The resort’s General Manager, Mark Eletr, emphasizes the importance of these efforts, noting that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings typically survive to maturity. The resort is committed to educating guests about the importance of protecting these beautiful creatures and their habitats.
Kandooma Maldives is dedicated to celebrating and protecting the rich marine life of the Maldives, from the mighty Manta Rays to the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtles. Through educational programs and responsible tourism practices, the resort aims to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of these remarkable species.
