Kuramathi Maldives: A Beautiful Island with a Bigger Purpose

July 21, 2025

On a quiet stretch of ocean in the Maldives, where palm trees sway and the water shifts between every shade of blue, something meaningful is happening behind the scenes. Kuramathi Maldives, a resort known for its natural beauty, is quietly leading the way when it comes to sustainability.

And the driving force behind it all? Tom Osborne, the resort’s Sustainability Manager-a marine biologist with a passion for creating real change in places that matter.

From Cornwall to the Coral Reefs

Originally from Cornwall in the UK, Tom grew up close to the sea. That early connection to nature eventually led him to pursue marine biology, where he focused his research on green turtles. His work has taken him from Costa Rica to Saudi Arabia, even to the coast of Kenya, where he helped create a local eco-centre. But it’s at Kuramathi where his efforts are making their most lasting impact.

Tom describes it simply: “We’re trying to make a big difference in a small place.” And it’s working.

Coral by Coral, Frame by Frame

One of the resort’s standout projects is the Muraka Coral Regeneration Project, where hundreds of coral fragments are being planted and nurtured just offshore. These small frames, gently placed underwater, are helping rebuild damaged reefs and provide new homes for marine life.

At the moment, there are over 240 coral frames supporting 3,600 coral fragments in the lagoon. But the goal is much bigger: 1,000 frames. As Tom explains, “We’re aiming to add 200 more in the coming months. It’s slow, but every fragment matters.”

A Home for Research and Innovation

Kuramathi is also becoming a hub for marine science. The island hosts master’s students from around the world who are using the resort’s reef systems as part of their research. Some are studying grey reef sharks nearby, others are mapping the carbonate budget of the reef-a key piece in understanding how reefs respond to climate change and how restoration can help offset carbon.

Later this year, students from Germany and Italy will arrive to explore how young fish respond to the reef’s chemical signals and to document the species living on the resort’s coral frames. These aren’t just scientific projects-they’re shaping the future of reef conservation, right here in the Maldives.

Power from the Sun, Not the Tank

Kuramathi is also taking steps to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. A new solar power system is being installed across 19 buildings on the island, expected to generate over 940,000 kWh of electricity each year. That means cutting diesel use by more than 250,000 litres annually, a major shift toward cleaner energy in an environment where diesel is often the default.

The Eco Centre: The Island’s Green Heart

At the centre of the resort sits the Eco Centre-a space dedicated to marine education, sustainability, and community. Here, guests can join snorkelling safaris, attend marine talks, or learn how the island reduces its environmental footprint.

One highlight? The hydroponic garden, where fresh herbs and leafy greens are grown without soil, right on the island. Not only does this provide the restaurants with healthy, ultra-local ingredients, but it also cuts down on imported produce and food waste.

Giving Back to the Community

Kuramathi’s sustainability work doesn’t stop at the shoreline. Every month, the Eco Centre team hosts the Rasdhoo Blue Tide Swim Club, inviting 25 local children from nearby islands to explore the reefs, swim with marine life, and learn about the ocean in a hands-on way.

It’s a simple idea: show the next generation what they’re protecting, and they’ll fall in love with it too.
