Madifushi Private Island marked World Coconut Day 2026 with a celebration highlighting the cultural, culinary and environmental importance of the coconut palm in the Maldives. Madifushi Private Island World Coconut Day 2026!

The programme brought together resort guests, the Madifushi Rays team and neighbouring island communities for a day centred on Maldivian traditions, coconut-inspired cuisine, wellness and community engagement.
From traditional coconut activities to planting new palms across Meemu Atoll, the celebration highlighted how deeply the coconut is connected to everyday life in the Maldives.
Celebrating a Maldivian Tradition
The celebrations began with a lively coconut-gathering and dehusking challenge for the Madifushi Rays team.
Wearing traditional Maldivian attire, team members collected coconuts from the island before competing to dehusk them within a set time. The activity offered a fun way to showcase a traditional skill while bringing the resort team together.
Throughout the day, guests could also discover different ways the coconut is used in Maldivian culture and cuisine.
Coconut-Inspired Flavours at Madifushi
Food was an important part of the World Coconut Day programme.
Special coconut-themed buffets were prepared across the resort’s food and beverage outlets, featuring coconut-inspired dishes alongside traditional Maldivian favourites.
The programme demonstrated the versatility of coconut as an ingredient, from savoury local dishes to tropical flavours and contemporary creations.
A dedicated coconut mixology pop-up added a modern element to the celebrations, offering refreshing drinks inspired by the tropical ingredient.
Discovering Traditional Coconut Crafts
In the evening, guests were invited to take part in a hands-on cultural experience exploring the traditional uses of the coconut and its palm.
Activities included coconut dehusking, coir-rope making, coconut toddy tasting and coconut painting.
Rather than simply observing these traditions, guests had the opportunity to participate directly. Each participant also received a certificate as a keepsake of their Maldivian cultural experience.
The celebration also included the soft launch of Heal\Me Coconut Oil, Madifushi Private Island’s own wellness product inspired by the long-standing role of coconut in island life.
Planting Coconut Palms with Local Communities
The celebration extended beyond the resort with a community planting initiative in Meemu Atoll.
The Madifushi team visited the neighbouring islands of Muli and Mulah, where they worked alongside local communities to plant coconut palms.
In Muli, the team joined the Island Council to plant coconut palms near the newly developed airport area. In Mulah, the resort collaborated with scouts from Mulah School to plant palms along the beach.
The initiative also encouraged younger members of the community to take an active role in caring for their island environment.
Protecting the Coconut Heritage of the Maldives
Coconut palms have long been an important part of Maldivian culture and island life. Different parts of the palm have traditionally been used for food, household items, crafts and livelihoods.
According to Mohamed Hilmy, General Manager of Madifushi Private Island, the World Coconut Day celebration provided an opportunity to share this heritage with resort guests and the team while creating meaningful connections with neighbouring communities.
The community planting programme forms part of Madifushi Private Island’s wider commitment to planting more coconut palms and strengthening its relationship with communities across Meemu Atoll.
