Travellers to the Maldives will soon experience a faster, more seamless arrival process as the government introduces advanced e-gate systems at Velana International Airport (VIA). The initiative, announced by President Mohamed Muizzu, marks a significant step in modernising border control and supporting the country’s growing tourism demand.
According to the President, the first set of e-gates-equipped with modern scanning and facial-recognition technology-has already been installed in Terminal 1, the new international terminal. The system is designed to dramatically reduce waiting times by allowing travellers to complete passport checks independently and efficiently.
Once a passport is scanned, the traveller’s next border clearance will be automatically processed using facial recognition, eliminating the need to queue at traditional immigration counters. The President confirmed that by January, a total of 20 e-gates-10 in each terminal-will be operational across both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Looking ahead, the Maldives plans to extend e-gate installations to other international airports across the country in 2026, reinforcing the nation’s strategy to enhance visitor experience and maintain smooth traffic flow during peak seasons.
