The Maldives has reached another important milestone in its tourism journey, welcoming its 1 millionth visitor of 2026 within the same timeframe as the previous year. This achievement highlights the resilience of the country’s tourism industry and reflects the continued confidence of travellers from around the world in the Maldives as a leading holiday destination.

The milestone was celebrated with a special welcome ceremony at Velana International Airport, organised by Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), and Maldives Immigration.
A Special Welcome To The Millionth Visitor
The 1 millionth tourist of 2026, Almudena Ortuño Esparza from Spain, arrived in the Maldives on 21 June 2026 aboard Qatar Airways. This marks her first visit to the destination, where she will enjoy her holiday in Vaavu Atoll, staying on the beautiful local island of Fulidhoo.
Upon arrival, Ms Esparza received a traditional cultural welcome and a selection of special gifts from tourism partners and industry stakeholders, celebrating both her arrival and this significant moment for Maldives tourism.
A Milestone Reflecting Industry Resilience
Reaching one million visitors within the same period as 2025 is a remarkable achievement, especially considering the challenges faced by global travel markets. The milestone represents the collective efforts of the Maldives tourism industry and its ability to adapt to changing international conditions.
Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Mohamed Ameen, highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating that reaching this milestone reflects the dedication and commitment of everyone working across the tourism sector.
“The Maldives tourism industry has shown great resilience, and this achievement reflects the hard work of everyone involved in maintaining the growth of this sector,” said the Minister.
Strengthening Global Presence And Tourism Partnerships
The continued growth of Maldives tourism has been supported by strategic marketing efforts and stronger engagement with key international markets. Visit Maldives Corporation has increased promotional activities in important source markets, including India, China, and Russia, while also expanding awareness in emerging markets.
The Maldives has participated in major international travel events such as SATTE 2026, MITT 2026, ITB Berlin, and ITB China, while building partnerships with travel and aviation companies to strengthen destination visibility and encourage more travellers to discover the islands.
Through these efforts, the Maldives continues to maintain its position as one of the world’s most desirable tropical destinations, offering unforgettable experiences from luxury island escapes to authentic local island adventures.
Looking Ahead To Visit Maldives Year 2027
As part of the celebration, Almudena Ortuño Esparza received the first official invitation to visit the Maldives during Visit Maldives Year 2027 from Hon. Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
She was also gifted a complimentary six-night stay at Coco Bodu Hithi, giving her the opportunity to return and experience the Maldives again during this special tourism campaign year.
With its natural beauty, world-class hospitality, and strong commitment to creating memorable travel experiences, the Maldives continues to welcome visitors from across the globe. This latest milestone reflects the destination’s enduring popularity and the strength of its tourism industry as it moves forward into another year of growth.
