Sun Siyam Olhuveli Welcomes Marine Biologist Myles Murphy-A New Chapter for Ocean Conservation

July 21, 2025

There’s something special about life underwater in the Maldives. From the swirl of colourful reef fish to the slow, graceful movements of manta rays, the ocean here feels alive-and fragile. At Sun Siyam Olhuveli, that beauty is both celebrated and protected. The resort has just taken another meaningful step forward by welcoming Myles Murphy as its new Marine Biologist.

A Lifelong Connection to the Ocean

Myles grew up in the UK, never far from the sea. That early love for the ocean turned into something more serious when he earned his degree in Marine Biology from the University of Newcastle. Since then, he’s worked in a range of marine environments, from cool UK coastlines to the warm waters of Indonesia.

In his most recent role, Myles was part of the Indo Ocean Project-where his days were spent restoring coral, surveying marine life, and assessing reef health. He comes to Olhuveli with hands-on experience and a clear purpose: to protect one of the most vibrant marine ecosystems on Earth.

Coral Gardening and Beyond

One of Myles’ first goals at Olhuveli is to build on the resort’s existing coral propagation work. Certified as a Coral Gardener, he’s focused on growing and transplanting coral to damaged sections of the reef-helping nature recover, slowly and sustainably.

But his role isn’t just under the surface. Myles will also lead marine surveys, collaborate with environmental partners, and bring a research-based approach to the resort’s wider conservation efforts. His background in geospatial analysis and marine science gives him a sharp lens through which to view the challenges and possibilities of reef protection.

Making Conservation Personal for Guests

What makes Myles’ approach stand out is his focus on guest involvement. He’s a strong believer in citizen science-inviting people to take part in real conservation work, not just observe from a distance. Whether it’s through guided snorkelling tours, educational sessions, or hands-on reef activities, guests at Olhuveli will have the chance to connect with the ocean in a meaningful, memorable way.

“It’s one thing to see a coral reef,” he says. “It’s something else entirely to help protect it.”

A Natural Fit for Olhuveli

The Maldives has always been known for its marine life-but also for the responsibility that comes with protecting it. With Myles now part of the team, Sun Siyam Olhuveli is deepening its commitment to sustainability, not just as a value, but as a daily practice.

His arrival marks an exciting new chapter for the resort, where conservation is not a side project, but part of the guest experience and the island’s long-term vision.
