The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort has completed the first phase of its Coral RISE (Coral Restoration Initiatives for Sustainable Ecosystems) programme, strengthening its focus on marine conservation and coral reef restoration in Baa Atoll.

From 18 to 20 September 2026, the resort worked alongside MARS Sustainable Solutions to install 100 Reef Stars and 1,500 coral fragments within its house reef, creating a dedicated area for coral restoration and marine education.
Supporting Coral Reef Restoration in Baa Atoll
The Coral RISE initiative uses the MARS Assisted Reef Restoration System (MARRS), a science-based approach developed by MARS Sustainable Solutions to support the recovery of damaged and degraded coral reef areas.
At the centre of the project are Reef Stars — sand-coated, hexagonal steel structures designed to provide a stable foundation for coral fragments.
Installed underwater and connected to create a supportive framework, the Reef Stars provide a structure where coral fragments can establish and grow. As the coral develops, the restoration area can also provide habitat for fish and other marine organisms.
The restoration process involves trained teams, locally sourced coral fragments, Reef Stars and continued maintenance and monitoring, with the aim of supporting the gradual development of a more diverse marine habitat.
Guests Take Part in Reef Conservation
The Coral RISE programme was introduced during World Wellness Weekend, extending the concept of wellbeing beyond individual health to include the natural environment.
Guests were invited to participate alongside the resort team and MARS Sustainable Solutions in building and preparing the Reef Stars before they were placed in the house reef.
The restoration area has been positioned in a location accessible for snorkelling, allowing guests to observe the structures and coral development over time.
Through ongoing marine education, visitors can also learn more about coral ecosystems and the importance of protecting the Maldives’ reef environments.
Creating a Living Marine Habitat
The installation of 100 Reef Stars and 1,500 coral fragments represents the first phase of Coral RISE at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort.
The project is designed as a long-term initiative rather than a one-time installation. Continued monitoring and care will be important as the coral fragments grow and the restoration area develops.
For the resort, making the project visible and accessible to guests provides an opportunity to connect the Maldives’ natural environment with the wider guest experience.
The initiative also highlights the role that resort-based conservation programmes can play in supporting awareness of the marine ecosystems surrounding the country’s islands.
Sustainability at The Westin Maldives
Coral RISE forms part of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort’s broader sustainability efforts.
Located in Baa Atoll, an area recognised for its marine biodiversity, the resort has continued to incorporate responsible practices into its operations and guest experiences.
The property also holds Green Globe certification, providing a framework for its wider sustainability initiatives.
Through Coral RISE, the resort is complementing these operational efforts with direct action focused on the health of its surrounding reef environment.
As the Reef Stars and coral fragments continue to develop, the restoration site will provide an ongoing opportunity for guests and the resort team to observe coral growth while learning more about reef conservation in the Maldives.
