A magical moment is unfolding on the shores of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives as the island prepares to welcome a new generation of sea turtles. With four active nests currently incubating, guests and marine enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting the hatchlings, expected to emerge around the next full moon.
Nature’s Gentle Giants
The nests belong mostly to Green Sea Turtles, one of the largest and most iconic sea turtle species. These gentle creatures, with their smooth heart-shaped shells and plant-based diets, play a vital role in keeping coral reefs and marine ecosystems healthy. A Hawksbill turtle nest may also be present, though it is still being monitored.
“Sea turtles are fascinating,” says Fernanda Cortina Escalante, Alila’s Marine Biologist. “They lead mostly solitary lives, traveling thousands of kilometers between feeding and nesting grounds. Watching their life cycle unfold on our island is a rare and special experience.”
Female turtles return to the very beaches where they hatched, digging nests under the cover of night. After 45 to 70 days, the hatchlings instinctively make their way to the ocean, beginning a journey that can last decades. Green turtles can live up to 80 years, grow as large as 1.5 meters, and weigh up to 300 kilograms.

Alila Kothaifaru takes conservation seriously. The resort works closely with its in-house marine biologist to monitor and protect the nesting sites, giving guests a chance to witness these incredible creatures safely and responsibly.
“Hosting these nests lets us share the importance of marine conservation with our guests,” says Camille Berger, Euro-Divers Manager. “It’s inspiring to see people from around the world connect with these amazing animals.”
Recently, 61 tiny hatchlings made their first journey from nest to sea, a heartwarming reminder of the delicate balance of life in the ocean. Thomas Weber, General Manager, adds, “Moments like these show the beauty of nature and the responsibility we have to protect it.”
