Why The Maldives Should Be Your Next Paradise Escape (2025 Travel Guide – Part 5)

How to Get Around the Islands

Getting around the scattered pearls of the Indian Ocean needs careful planning. The Maldives has a unique layout where each resort sits on its own island. This creates special travel challenges and makes it different from any other place in the world.

Seaplanes and Domestic Flights

Seaplanes give you the classic Maldives experience with amazing aerial views as they take you to distant resorts. Trans Maldivian Airways runs the world’s largest seaplane fleet. They serve more than 80 Maldives resorts and fly over 1,000,000 passengers each year.

These air taxis only fly during daylight hours (06:00 to 16:00). Here’s what you need to know:

  • You can bring 20kg checked baggage and 5kg hand luggage per person.
  • Flight times vary: 15–20 minutes to nearby resorts, up to 70 minutes to the farthest atolls.
  • Kids under 2 fly free, while those 2–11 years old need child tickets.

Domestic flights link Velana International Airport to 13 regional airports across the country. You’ll usually need a boat ride after your flight to reach your final spot. These flights cost between AED 550–1652 (about $150–450) per person.

Speedboats and Ferries

Speedboats work great for resorts near Malé, mainly in North and South Malé Atolls. They run day and night, which helps if you arrive late. Resort staff will meet you at the airport and guide you to your boat.

Speedboat benefits include:

  • Quicker than public ferries (45–50 minutes to places like One&Only Reethi Rah)
  • Cheaper than seaplanes (AED 36–195 per adult)
  • You might spot dolphins and other sea life during your trip

Public ferries offer the best value for money. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) runs these under the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) brand. They use an organized zone system:

Zone Coverage Area
01 Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani Atolls
02 Noonu, Raa, Baa Atolls
03 Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu Atolls
04 Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, Thaa, Laamu Atolls
05 Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls
06 Seenu, Gnaviyani Atolls

Public ferry tickets cost just AED 3.67, while shared speedboats charge around AED 128.52. Budget travelers exploring local islands will find this perfect.
